Dublin Car Rental

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a motorist, Dublin can be quite conveniently explored in a rental car. There is a choice of international and local car rental companies - Nearly all offering car pick up and drop off both in the city centre and at the airport. You pretty much get a standard selection of makes and models available throughout Europe. Many car rental companies offer optional on-board GPS navigation systems. Please note that, compared to other main European tourist destinations, you may find car rental relatively expensive in Ireland. It is advisable to shop around and book in advance to get a competitive price.

Please remember to DRIVE ON THE LEFT and avoid the rush hour between 7:00-9:00 and 16:00-19:00. Dublin is well signposted, with most signage being bi-lingual Irish and English. Don't worry, the English version is usually displayed more prominently.

Age Of Driver
Conditions vary slightly between rental companies with regard to the age of the driver. Most car rental companies in Ireland specify a minimum age, some have a maximum age for drivers as well. Where available, this information ahs been added to the company profiles below. Generally speaking if you are younger than 25 or older than 69, you may need to shop around a bit for a rental.

Driving Licence
To drive a rental car in Ireland, drivers must be in possession of a full, unendorsed driving licence which they have held for at least two years prior to the start of the rental period. The licence must have been issued by the country of your permanent residence. Holders of UK, US, Canadian, Australian and all EU member states do not need to supply an International Driving Permit (IDP). If you produce an IDP, you must also show your original domestic driving licence. UK residents with a photo card driving licence must show both parts of their current driving licence when picking up the car. Please note, that drivers must be in possession of their licence at all times when driving the rental car.
