Irish Museum Of Modern Art, Dublin

Marvel at this fabulous collection of modern art in the oldest showpiece building in Dublin. There are few places in Dublin where the old and the new are so strikingly in balance. The Irish Museum of Modern Art in the impressive 17th century Royal Hospital Kilmainham is well worth a visit.

On this link you can buy Dublin pass which includes entry to the Irish Museum Of Modern Art.

Stunning Location: The Royal Hospital Kilmainham
Sparked by the construction of Les Invalides in Paris under Louis XIV, Dublin build its own home for war veterans in 1684. Closely following the French blueprint, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham has four wings enclosing a courtyard with covered walks. Formal 17th century gardens with an elaborate maze surround the Hospital.

At the time, the Hospital was the first monumental public building to be erected in Dublin. Others, such as the Custom House and the Four Courts followed, but the Hospital well and truly marks the beginning of Dublin's love affair with spectacular architecture during its Georgian economical heyday.

The Museum's Art Collections
The Irish Museum Of Modern Art (IMMA) opened its doors in 1991. IMMA's collection contains some 4,500 works from the 1940's onwards. The museum's permanent collection is 1,650 works strong. Collections on loan, such as the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection and the Weltkunst Foundation Collection of British Art from the 1980s and 1990s make up the rest. IMMA also houses the Madden Arnholz Collection of prints by Old Masters.

The museum hosts regular exhibitions bringing the oeuvre of international avantgarde artists into the intimate Dublin setting. Recent highlights include exhibitions of works by Laurie Anderson, Keith Haring and William S. Burroughs among others.
